Spain really does have something for everyone and one of your first decisions will be to decide on which area is the best fit for you. Here are our guides to some of the most popluar areas to consider....
Nestled in stunning beautiful Spanish countryside, Algorfa is a traditional agricultural village situated just 16 km or 15 minutes from the spectacular Mediterranean coast of the southern Costa Blanca. Sitting in the shadow of Mount Escotera and on the banks of the Segura river, Algorfa offers a quieter and more relaxed option to the bustling coastal resorts. Surrounded by citrus and olive groves, Algorfa is well connected to both the coastline and neighbouring resorts such as Villamartin, Cabo Roig, Campoamor and Mil Palmeras amongst many others. The upmarket golfing resort of La Finca is situated within walking distance and offers an array of superb bars and restaurants as well as a 5* hotel and spa facility on the famous championship golf course, one of dozens of fantastic courses within 30 or so minutes drive.
With a permanent population of just 3,000 people, split almost equally between Spanish and other (mainly European) nationalities, Algorfa retains it’s laid back Spanish identity whilst seamlessly integrating an eclectic mix of international communities and second-home owners.
Whilst the Spanish contingent can traditionally be found mainly within the old village, the extensive mix of expats and foreign visitors tend to be found within the four main urbanisations and newer developments in the surrounding area.
Easily accessible and well served by flights from all of the major European airports, travelling down from Alicante airport takes only 45 minutes, whilst the new Corvera International Airport in Murcia is even closer at only 40 minutes drive from the centre of Orihuela Costa. And with UK flights starting from less than a tenner each way, a long weekend in the sun is often cheaper than catching a taxi into your local town centre.
With such a broad mix of nationalities calling Algorfa home, a vibrant social and entertainment culture has evolved with traditional Spanish bars and restaurants standing side by side with neighbours offering every imaginable style of cuisine. A good selection of shops are located within Alforfa as well as an opticians and pharmacy, whilst Wednesday is market day where you’ll find everything from clothing to fresh local produce and wines to handmade arts and crafts.
A short drive down to the coast will take you to the nearest golden sands of Gaurdamar del Segura where you have eight beaches from which to choose – one of which is exclusively nudist for the more adventurous amongst us! If that’s not enough choice, there are dozens more beaches, coves and marinas along this stretch of the coastline to tempt you.
Blessed with a climate that the World Health Organisation declare to be one of the very healthiest in the world, the area is noted as having ‘as near perfect an environment as it is possible to obtain’ – high praise indeed! Year-round sunshine and low humidity are a perfect combination and with the Costa Blanca enjoying an average annual temperature of 19o, highs of 40o+ and more than 3000 hours of sunshine over 320+ days, few other regions can compete. Water temperatures average 25o even in the autumn meaning you can take a dip in the Med well into late October whilst daytime temperatures often still reach well into the 20’s throughout December making this the perfect spot to escape the British winter!
