Spain really does have something for everyone and one of your first decisions will be to decide on which area is the best fit for you. Here are our guides to some of the most popluar areas to consider....
Torre de la Horadada
Stationed at the most southerly end of the Spanish Costa Blanca, Torre de la Horadada is a town experiencing a marked surge in popularity. Originally a small Spanish fishing village, and not to be mistaken for its sister town of Pilar de la Horadada, Torre de la Horadada retains a typical Spanish pace and laid-back charm with a beautiful coastline and long dune beaches.
How to get there
Easily accessible and well served by flights from all of the major European airports, travelling down from Alicante airport takes only 45 minutes, whilst the new Corvera International Airport in Murcia is even closer at only 40 minutes drive from the centre of Orihuela Costa. And with UK flights starting from less than a tenner each way, a long weekend in the sun is often cheaper than catching a taxi into your local town centre.
Things to do
The town’s central square is enclosed by a selection of restaurants, offering predominantly Spanish based cuisine. Although quiet in the winter months, reflecting the mainly Spanish occupancy, the summer and holiday months bring with them an influx of holidaymakers and second homeowners meaning you’ll need to book in advance to be guaranteed a seat at your favourite. Just off the square is the marina, Porto Marina IV, capable of accommodating upto 525 berths of upto 12 meters in length, as well as a range of other motorised and wind powered watercraft. Overlooking the marina is the historic watchtower, built in 1951, which lends it’s name to the town. Originally part of the chain of coastal defensives created to protect against Berber pirates, the tower occupies a rocky outcrop jutting out into the Mediterranean and is a now a national monument.
Neighbouring the marina is the Playa del Conde, a small golden sandy beach lined cove which enjoys Blue Flag accreditation. Slightly further down the coast, Torre de la Horadada’s beaches widen out significantly and encompass the Torre dunes and long stretches of Blue Flag awarded beaches. Its along this stretch that you’ll find some of the frontline new-build beach developments, sympathetically designed and constructed to maintain the unspoilt feel of the area.
Weather
Blessed with a climate that the World Health Organisation declare to be one of the very healthiest in the world, the area is noted as having ‘as near perfect an environment as it is possible to obtain’ – high praise indeed! Year-round sunshine and low humidity are a perfect combination and with the Costa Blanca enjoying an average annual temperature of 19o, highs of 40o+ and more than 3000 hours of sunshine over 320+ days, few other regions can compete. Water temperatures average 25o even in the autumn meaning you can take a dip in the Med well into late October whilst daytime temperatures often still reach well into the 20’s throughout December making this the perfect spot to escape the British winter!
