Spain really does have something for everyone and one of your first decisions will be to decide on which area is the best fit for you. Here are our guides to some of the most popluar areas to consider....
Pinar de Campoverde literally translates as ‘pine forest and green fields’ and perfectly reflects its privileged location nestled into a lush pine clad hillside at the foot of the Sierra de Escalona mountains. Situated 8km inland and just a few kilometres from the town of Pilar de la Horadada, Pinar de Campoverde is a hidden gem having the perfect blend of traditional village feel and relaxing holiday atmosphere.
As the name suggests the town is surrounded by beautiful countryside, with its elevated position ensuring spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and pine forests towards the Mediterranean and Mar Menor seas. The famous Rio Seco Natural Park sits along the southwest edge of the town and provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy long scenic walks along the dry riverbed, whilst the dramatic sandstone gorge is home to a magnificent waterfall and is a great spot to relax and enjoy these wonderful surroundings.
The population of over 3000 inhabitants comprises an eclectic mix of expats, embracing dozens of nationalities and making for a vibrant and welcoming community spirit. With a good mix of both permanent residents, second home owners and holidaymakers, the village is busy year-round.
Easily accessible and well served by flights from all of the major European airports, travelling down from Alicante airport takes only 45 minutes, whilst the new Corvera International Airport in Murcia is even closer at only 40 minutes drive from the centre of Orihuela Costa. And with UK flights starting from less than a tenner each way, a long weekend in the sun is often cheaper than catching a taxi into your local town centre.
Some of the most beautiful Blue Flag golden sandy beaches in the region are just a short 12 minute drive, whilst the superb Lo Romero Golf Resort is just 5 minutes away and offers one of the best golfing experiences along the coastline, although for those who enjoy variety there are a further 32 courses within a 30 minute radius.
Blessed with a climate that the World Health Organisation declare to be one of the very healthiest in the world, the area is noted as having ‘as near perfect an environment as it is possible to obtain’ – high praise indeed! Year-round sunshine and low humidity are a perfect combination and with the Costa Blanca enjoying an average annual temperature of 19o, highs of 40o+ and more than 3000 hours of sunshine over 320+ days, few other regions can compete. Water temperatures average 25o even in the autumn meaning you can take a dip in the Med well into late October whilst daytime temperatures often still reach well into the 20’s throughout December making this the perfect spot to escape the British winter!
Pinar de Campoverde itself is split into two distinct areas – the ‘old town’ and the ‘new town’ – with each being primarily distinguished by the style and architecture of the buildings within each area. The ‘old town’ is mainly made up of older, large detached villas on spacious plots whilst newer townhouses, detached and semi-detached villas on smaller plots, a few apartments and some new-build developments can be found in the ‘new town’. Both areas are well served with local facilities with plenty of restaurants, bars, coffee shops and international supermarkets as well as a chemist, doctors’ surgery, dentist, a vets and bank.
